For my sins, I must admit that I have become addicted to tapping the app! My iPhone has so many pages of apps that it takes me a while to swipe through to find which one I want. There are the useful apps, such as Google Maps, and several that I thought would be utilised more than they are but which seem to sit redundantly on the smartphone. The great thing is that I haven’t spent a penny downloading these apps because there are so many amazing free ones available on the iTunes App.
Social apps help keep you connected with others anywhere in the world:
Twitter – use Twitter to keep up to date with what’s happening with real time search. Find trending topics, tweet, send DMs, share photos, videos and links with friends and followers.
Facebook – Facebook for iPhone makes it easy to stay connected. Check out your friends’ status updates and photos or upload your own mobile photos to Facebook while on the go.
Skype – With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch you can call and instant message anyone else on Skype for free. You can also call landlines and mobiles and send SMS anywhere in the world, at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use.
A great app that allows you to communicate with other smartphone users without manually adding them as contacts. This is achieved by identifying the users based on their phone number, so that everyone in your phonebook already using WhatsApp will automatically show up in the list of people you can contact for free.
My favourite apps when I have a bit of ‘me-time’ are:
Discover, buy and share music with Shazam. This is the perfect app for those moments when you hear a piece of music that you really like and can’t identify! How often has that happened to you? With the Shazam app all you have to do is hold your device up, preferably close to the speaker from where the music is emanating and Shazam will identify the piece (usually within 30 seconds), tag it, allow you to share it by text, email, Twitter and Facebook, and gives you the option to purchase it. It may not be magic but it is clever!
This is the addictive word game that is the perfect app for Scrabble fans. Words With Friends has become one of the most popular leisure apps available and the reason for this is that you can play with real friends (or strangers) and have numerous games on the go at any time. This social game has Facebook integration and notifies you when someone talks to you in the game chat.
If you have any spare time and fancy yourself as a bit of a David Hockney, then check out this painting app especially designed for the iPad that is well designed and easy to use. Great for amateur artists, Brushes lets you paint with 11 brush styles, adjust brush spacing, size, and colour transparency. Once you have created your masterpiece there is Dropbox support, Facebook and Twitter sharing, and the ability to send to the camera roll. You can also watch a video of the image being created.
